Of all the monthly subscriptions available at Altenew, the Paint-A-Flower line is my very favorite, with it’s variety of voluptuous floral arrangements. This month I took the name literally, and Painted A Flower, or three!

I started by stamping the image in the corner of an A2 watercolor paper card panel with embossing ink and heat setting with white embossing powder. To make a white outline work on a “white” background (watercolor paper is sometimes more off-white) it’s necessary to carry the color beyond the image outlines.

I used both the Artist 24 Pan and the 36 Pan paint sets, because I like the blend of colors between the two palettes. To achieve these muted colors, I added some grey to the cool blue/purple paints and mixed some dark brown paint with the warmer red paints. I painted each petal with lighter color, but went back before it dried to add darker pigment to the shadows to allow it to blend and dry naturally.

For the background colors, (for the most part), I simply pulled more of each of the colors of the flower or leaves into it’s immediate background. But where it’s not a direct “outside the lines” spillover, I used shades that are opposite that spot on the other side of the image to balance the whole. For example, diagonal from the purple rose is an area of similar lavender color on the bottom right. To the left of the purple rose is a patch of green that is drawn from the leaves on the far left side of the card. And so on…

After the paint dried and the splatters were added, I stamped a combo-greeting from the PAF Rosa Floribunda stamp set and heat set with Platinum embossing powder. I used some platinum metallic thread to wrap around the card panel and tied it with a bow.
