Along with the PAF Himalayan Poppy, Altenew is releasing a set of Woodless Coloring Pencils, a set of Monochrome Shading Pencils and Masking Tape. You will notice the felt tip pens in some of the photos – they are prototypes we got to try that will be coming to the store soon as well.

My projects today use a mix of these new coloring tools.

This card features the PAF Himalayan Poppy stamped on Bristol Smooth cardstock and heat embossed with clear embossing powder. Then I scribbled puddles of waterbased color with the pens onto the watercolor palette and used a damp/wet brush to pick up pigment and blend the blue and purple colors together to create the mix of color you see.

I fussy cut the flowers and adhered them to a vellum tag cut with the Terrific Tags die set, then popped the tag up onto the background patterned paper with dimensional foam adhesive. I added some Platinum Metallic thread ties at the top, stamped a greeting from the PAF set onto grey cardstock and finished the card with some coordinating enamel dots.

For the second card, I built on the remainders of the first card. I used Altenew Watercolor paper pad, stamped the Poppy image with Obsidian Pigment Ink, heat set it with a heat tool, then misted the remaining marker ink on the palette with a water mister bottle and laid the paper face down in the diluted color puddles. I did the flower colors separately from the greens at the bottom, drying between each time so there would be no risk of the complementary colors mixing and turning to mud.

I used a light hand with the waterbased pens, building up layers of color, but when any kind of watercolor dries, it always dries back lighter. A perfect opportunity to bring the Woodless Coloring Pencils into play. I added shadow and shading with the corresponding shades of pencils to paint, and lightly colored over those areas. I especially love the result on the texture of the watercolor paper – the way the pencil shading looks sort of like cross-hatching.

I stamped another greeting from the Himalayan Poppy set, trimmed the stamped panel slightly smaller than A2 card size, and matted it with a matching piece of paper from the Gel Printing Soft Wash Paper Pack. I finished the card with a strip of polka dot paper from my stash and a few clear flat sequins.
