The watercolor brush marker refills are super interesting! Most of my watercolor brush markers are close to half used up and I have been hoarding them, not wanting to face the day when they might run dry, but happily Altenew has now provided refills for them! Beyond that though, they are just a very nice, convenient and awesome way to watercolor paint, by adding drops of paint into a palette and either painting direct to paper or diluting with some water to achieve a much less intense color.
To begin, I have a couple of cards that are completely similar to each other in terms of design, but utilize different color schemes.
I used the Adore You stamp set to stamp onto watercolor paper and heat embossed with white embossing powder before painting the images with a mix of Limeade, Emerald and Dusk for the leaves and Rubellite, Autumn Blaze and Warm Sunshine for the flowers. All of the colors mentioned are from the Spring Garden set of Watercolor Refills. The “thanks” sentiment comes from the Dainty Swiss Dots stamp set.
I love the incredible strength of pigment of this paint because it provides both intensity when needed and a-little-goes-a-long-way-economy when you add a little water for more pastel effects.
The second card is also painted with colors from the Spring Garden paint set, but with fewer colors. I used Moss and some Limeade for the leaves and background with a touch of Crimson from the Tropical Fiesta color set for the leaves. On the flowers I painted with Warm Sunshine and more Crimson and let them blend as they liked.
I added a sentiment from the Birthday Builder Stamp Set. For both cards, I cut the watercolored panel shorter than an A2 sized card and added some patterned paper for contrast. I also added paint splatters with the remaining paint, and completed the cards with matching enamel dots.
Up next is another card made with colors from the Spring Garden paint set. (I did actually make painted samples with colors from each of the three paint sets – Spring Garden, Winter Wonderland and Tropical Fiesta – but I seem to have ended up making cards with mostly the Spring Garden painted panels.)
For this card, I applied painter’s masking tape to the edges of a piece of watercolor paper, then covered the center area with clean water with a wide water brush. Then I dropped color (Dusk, Moss and Warm Sunshine) directly from the bottles into the wet areas, allowing them to blend, and then “helping” a little with a wet paint brush. Once dry, I stamped the image from the Dot Art stamp set, and added a sentiment from the Sentiment Strips stamp set, stamping both with Obsidian Pigment ink.
Lastly, I have a card that uses a rainbow of paint colors from all three color sets! I began by washing the entire card panel, not quite to the edges, with clean water. Then I dropped Crimson, Autumn Blaze, Warm Sunshine, Sweet Leaf, Midnight Violet, Prussian Blue and Turquoise paint drops onto the wet surface and let them run together and blend.
I took care to place colors next to each other that play nicely together on the color wheel, such as blue and yellow, which, when blended, create green, and keeping colors like purple and green, which make icky shades of mud, from overlapping.
Once dry, I used the Leaf Cluster stamp and die set to die cut the leafy branch from the painted panel, as well as two more layers from regular cardstock, and to stamp the coordinating leaf image onto cream colored cardstock with Obsidian Pigment ink. I added the layers of extra die cuts behind the card front to add dimension over top the black stamped image layer. I stamped a sentiment from the Sentiment Strips stamp set, with Obsidian Pigment ink onto Pale Gray cardstock, and added some Rock Collection gray enamel dots for balance.
